4-ways-to-regrow-edges
Nothing is worse than looking at your beautiful child and seeing thinning edges. A number of things can cause hair edges to fall out whether it be heat damage, too much tension along the hairline, sleeping on harsh, abrasive fabrics, chemical relaxers or hair extensions. Don’t panic! No matter what got you and your baby here, we are here to help! Follow these 5 tips and you’ll be on your way to better looking edges and a fuller hairline in no time.

1.) Oils Are Your Friends!

Rosemary Oil
A Web MD article online stated that “Rosemary Oil may help you get a thicker, shinier mane.” Studies have proven this oil to help with hair loss in both men and women. The Rosemary plant is native to the Mediterranean, and it gives off a evergreen scent.

Francesc Casado Galcera invented a hair lotion that included Rosemary as a prime ingredient and the results were truly amazing. Those who tried the lotion saw a “rapid increase in hair growth.” Truly we can see why Rosemary Oil needs to be on the top of our shopping cart whether online or in store.

Castor Oil
The second oil that needs no introduction is Castor Oil. This oil is well known to those in the natural hair community. Shea Moisture carries many products with the Jamaican Black Castor Oil as the leading ingredient, and for good reason!

Castor oil is known to repair past damage and to protect against new damage. It is a vegetable oil obtained by pressing the seeds of the castor plant to release the oil. The oil has natural antibacterial and anti fungal properties that prevent against dandruff and scalp infections that usually cause hair loss, especially to hair edges. To get the best result from using this product make sure to massage it in on your scalp each night before bed.

Massaging stimulates circulation
Massaging these oils into your scalp is key to regrowing your edges. You may want to take turns using the Rosemary and Castor oil. Use one for one week then switch to the other oil, or try mixing them together. Since everyone is different your child’s hair may respond better to castor oil while another young lady’s hair may respond to rosemary oil.

2.) Take a Break!

The second tip is critical if you want results. Most ladies find it hard not to do this, but, you need to leave your child’s edges alone! This means no longer brushing their hair up into tight ponytails as this just helps the hair to fall out. No more braided extensions, or at least take a break in between styles. Slicking down baby hairs with gel may also cause some issues. Give their hair a break for a few weeks and you’d be surprised at the results.

When it comes to your child’s hair, less manipulation is best!

3.) Lavender isn’t just for soaps!

Third on the list of ways to regrow edges is Lavender water. Lavender is well known for its ability to help calm and soothe but it also promotes hair growth. You can pair the lavender plant with tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar to create a homemade rinse.

Tea tree oil is very powerful, this oil is recommend to only be used in small dosages.

Apple Cider Vinegar is the mother of all vinegars in our opinion, it is known for giving your hair a squeaky clean feel, your scalp will thank you.

In the natural hair community rinses are very important, they restore your natural hair PH level which can aid in hair growth. This cleansing treatment can be used alongside your normal shampoo or separately, the choice is yours.

Lavender Rinse Recipe | Let the ingredients sit overnight and you use the next day.

  • ¾ cup of dried lavender
  • 4 cups of distilled water
  • ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 drops of tea tree oil

4.) You Are What You Eat!

The second to last way to regrow edges is looking into your child’s diet to see if you are getting enough iron and protein. As we all know your hair is made up of protein. You can get protein from eggs, meat, poultry, and leafy green vegetables. Your body needs iron for circulation and an increase in circulation helps with hair growth. Make sure to first check with your child’s pediatrician to determine if this could aid in hair growth.

5.) Nightly Protection Is A Must!

A lot of parents overlook this step. If you do too, trust us, you are not alone! Most children, when they sleep, toss and turn back and forth in their bed. As they turn, their head is rubbing agains their pillowcase. What are the majority of pillowcases made out of? Cotton! Cotton absorbs moisture with a quickness and will suck up all of the moisture out of your little one’s precious curls and coils. Not only that, this abrasive fabric will cause friction against your child’s hair damaging it and causing it to break off.

It is imperative that you invest in a quality satin bonnet or satin pillowcase, or both! Satin helps hair retain its moisture and won’t damage the hair while your little one is off in dream land. Keep in mind, however, beauty supply store bonnets are the WORST! They are not made of satin and the elastic edges of the bonnet can damage the edges as well!

We recommend checking out our online store, The Natural Hair Shop, which offers quality satin bonnets, silk satin pillowcases, and satin infant protectors for babies. We’d love if you gave us a try, and if so, take 10% off of your order with coupon code: blog10.
